“The School for Wives” Based on Molière and Directed by Cristi Juncu, Opens the TNRS Autumn Season

The “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu will present the preview and premiere of “The School for Wives”, based on Molière and directed by Cristi Juncu, in September. The preview will take place on Thursday, 10 September, at 7:00 p.m., while the premiere is scheduled for Friday, 11 September, at the same time, at the TNRS main venue, 2 Corneliu Coposu Boulevard. The production is directed, translated and adapted by Cristi Juncu, who also created the musical concept. The set design is by Carmencita Brojboiu, while the choreography is by Vlad Furtună. The cast includes Nicu Mihoc, Antonia Dobocan / Crina Dumitrașcu, Andrei Gîlcescu, Adrian Matioc, Pali Vecsei / Ștefan Tunsoiu, Codruța Vasiu / Serenela Mureșan, Liviu Vlad and Mihai Coman.

Convinced that women’s intelligence is the surest path to infidelity, Arnolphe has raised the young Agnes in carefully supervised ignorance. He has kept her isolated and educated her according to the 1,623 rules of marriage—devised by none other than himself!—in order to turn her into an obedient future wife incapable of deceiving him.

The plan seems flawless. Until Horace appears. A bow, a declaration of love, a secretly delivered letter—and Agnes discovers love and, above all, her own will. Arnolphe’s entire plan falls apart, leaving him trapped in his own strategy.

Under Cristi Juncu’s direction, “The School for Wives” becomes a sharp and surprisingly relevant comedy about possessiveness, the fear of ridicule and the illusion that a person can be raised to belong to someone else. A masterpiece of classical comedy, Molière’s play acquires a contemporary rhythm through a fast-paced sequence of situations in which farce and social criticism come together in a theatrical experience for all tastes.
