Cities on stage

„Cities on stage / Oraşe pe scenă” is a project financed with the help of the European Commission’s Culture Programme.
For five years, the partners– Théâtre National of Bruxelles (Belgium), Folkteatern of Göteborg (Sweden), Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe of Paris (France), The „Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu (Romania), Teatro de la Abadía of Madrid (Spain), Teatro Stabile di Napoli (Italy) and the Festival of Avignon – set out to create seven co-productions based on original scripts. Thus, between 2011 and 2016 the seven artists selected for writing the texts, Fabrice Murgia (Belgium), Lars Norén (Sweden), Joël Pommerat (France), Gianina Cărbunariu (Romania), Antonio Araujo (Brasil), Emma Dante (Italy) and Olivier Py (France) decided to create a provocative chronicle of the present-day world, giving rise to of a repertoire of new performances, connected to the novel realities of a continent facing continuous transformations.

As part of the project, Gianina Cărbunariu created at the „Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu the performance „Solitaritate” / “Solitarity”, which premiered in May 2013. The year 2014 was marked by the invitation to the official selection of the Avignon Festival, where tickets for the eight scheduled performances were sold out and received enthusiastic reviews in the French press. Gianina Cărbunariu’s production was accompanied at Avignon by an exhibition created by Dan Perjovschi, entitled „Ziarul Orizontal” / “Horizontal Newspaper”, part of a section of the project, entitled „Moving Cities” / “Oraşe în mişcare”.
Furthermore, in May 2014, the „Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu hosted for the duration of a month a group of seven young French actors, who took part in a series of workshops coordinated by director Vlad Massaci. „Sibiu, o rană neînchisă” / „Sibiu, an open wound”, a documentary theatre project, which was completed by a performance as part of the XXI-st edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, followed after a few days by another performance, at the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe in Paris.

Moving Cities
The „Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu created a unique project in Romania with the help of artist Dan Perjovschi. HORIZONTAL NEWSPAPER – CITIES IN MOVEMENT / ZIARUL VERTICAL – ORAŞE ÎN MIŞCARE is an urban art platform representing a vivid chronicle of the lives of the city’s inhabitants by means of site-specific interventions with drawings of the social commentary type. The wall next to the Sibiu National Theatre became a non-museum collection which forms a new type of urban poetry. The project commenced on the occasion of the premiere of the performance „Solitarity” by Gianina Cărbunariu and united artists, graphers and ordinary citizens in a public debate on society and politics.
