Princess Turandot, written by Carlo Gozzi in 1762, is the story of a Chinese princess who will marry the man capable to solve three riddles.
Director Andriy Zholdak abandons Carlo Gozzi’s text and imagines a surrealistic world where the Gozzi, awaken from Goya’s “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters”, descends among his distorted characters in order to tell stories and let them tell themselves.
Altoum’s kingdom is a world running towards its own death, a decadent world, an ancient world, obsessed with its own fragility, with its own ending. A sunken universe – no wonder the references to Atlantis myth, where the heroes are wearing the Nazi sign (but it could the sign of any totalitarian system).
The director pursues the falling of man; from soldier, he becomes animal. This is a neurotic universe. The radical method chosen to stage the three riddles transformed into a ’gender clash’ allows a crescendo of violence which will degenerate into a real Arming Race presented with (self)irony.
