Romeo and Juliet is not just a love story. It is the story of a curse and the way in which the dead continue to live among us, and determine our actions and decisions.
“I am a puppet in the hands of faith”, says Romeo in act 3, once Death becomes part of the most told everlasting love story.
It is the chronicle of anticipated, predicted deaths. For death is the only way in which the flare of “a love so ardent” can be quenched. And Mercutio will not find peace until his curse is fulfilled.
As for us, mere mortals who have the vanity to tell such an old and well-known story, we can only hope for being tainted a little by it, so as to enrich our souls when we look out towards the world. And to accept, though not without a fight, that no matter how much we’d struggle to find new and modern theatre realities and methods, we are nothing but puppets in the hands of faith.
