The performance “The Idiot”, directed by Andriy Zholdak, a homage paid by TNRS – Digital Stage to F. M. Dostoyevsky, who died 140 years ago.

10-Feb-2021

In February, subscribers of TNRS – Digital Stage will be able to access the performance “The Idiot”, directed by Andriy Zholdak, free of charge. This month’s gift commemorates 140 years from the death of the famous Russian writer, Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky, and is available to TNRS – Digital Stage subscribers regardless of the chosen subscription (1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months). The cast includes Constantin Chiriac interpreting Rogózhin, and is performed in Russian, with Romanian and English subtitles.

‘I wanted to send this message publicly, as the previous release on this heartfelt gift included pictures from the second performance, which we produced in Sibiu alongside the late actor Virgil Flonda, a performance that travelled around the world. Regarding the 20th anniversary of this performance, created in Kiev, together with Napodol Theatre and Andriy Zholdak, looking back, I realise that it was a truly insane experience, as in 25 days, I learnt the whole text in Russian, although I did not speak Russian, but I was familiar with the musicality of this language which I had heard as I child raised on the bank of the Prut River.

This performance, this insane experience, this gift you are receiving, was recorded at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in 2000. In an attempt to support the Romanian audience, I said some parts of certain monologues in Romanian, but in the official version and in all the representations performed on tour, from Russia, to Europe and Asia, I interpreted the role in Russian only. It was a great pleasure for me to be able to be part of such a tour de force, and the results were exquisite. My biggest regret is that unfortunately, the initial performance created in Kiev was performed in different venues: the first part, until the wedding, at Napodol Theatre, then the second at the Kiev Cathedral, where we staged a fully-fledged ceremony, with all the religious ingredients, including a 120-person choir, who performed “Lord, have mercy” in Russian. At that point, one instinctively kneeled down and, when Nastasya Filippovna was about to testify to God that she freely and willingly wanted to marry Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin, I let out a terrible cry: ‘Nastenka!’ At that moment, everybody stepped aside creating an aisle, and I went and stole her away. The audience followed us, as the third part took place in an abandoned house, which I later found out was the house of Bulgakov’s parents – such a wonderful coincidence, to be able to perform in the house where Bulgakov was born! At the end of the show, which took place in a huge room in that house, when I, as Rogózhin, killed Nastasya Filippovna and Myshkin entered the door, all the doors and windows were nailed shut. Nobody could leave that place, that room in the middle of which were a fire and a coffin...

It was a ravishing experience and a unique feeling to see the show again recently. From the bottom of our hearts, we hope that this gift offered 20 years later is received as it should.’ – Constantin Chiriac, General Manager of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu, President of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
