I believe that the performance at Sibiu attempts to shatter the complex of adversity as gratuitousness of existence. Originating on stage through an experience that is of aesthetic nature rather than analytic, this text, carefully reconstructed (some scenes were summarized and part of the torments was excluded), can be misinterpreted without being disclosed entirely, yet somehow converted to its better nature – which is offered to us for contemplation. I hope to not see the three sisters as insipid and inconsolable anymore, but as three totems that reign over the wonderful realm depicted by Vershinin. I hope to discard the image of a “disharmonic” insane world – as per the minor “lucid” directorial lectures – and acquire the vision of a valuable mechanism that endows the mankind in “Three sisters” with nobility, even in its most erratic violent moments. Instead of the terrible lack of communication (oh, ever so painful to us, don’t you think?) I’d prefer some flirting with the surrealism. Maybe humour can blossom in lieu of the neurotic misery. You see, I wouldn’t want to “free myself” from the sisters’ complex of Chekhov or “bring it in the face of conscience”, but I’d like to drink them in, like the fierce i-res-pon-sa-ble defiant spectator that I am.
(Sebastian-Vlad Popa)
