“Faust” returns with new cast

23-Mar-2017

“Faust”, one of the most anticipated performances of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu, returns to Fabrica de cultură, as the first two representations of this year are scheduled for 8 and 9 April.

An important landmark of Romanian theatre after 1989, the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre production premiered on 19 September 2007, and was one of the reference projects in the Programme of Sibiu European Capital of Culture 2007. Listed as one the best performances in the world, the show directed by Silviu Purcărete was performed on one of the most important European stages: Goethe Festival in Frankfurt (Germany, 2008), Edinburgh International Festival (United Kingdom, 2009), Tour & Taxis Bruxelles (Belgium, 2011), and Maribor European Capital of Culture (Maribor, 2012). It has been played 160 times and seen by about 57,600 spectators.

The performance highlights the very special relationship between Faust and Mephisto. From the very beginning, the director, Silviu Purcărete has worked with several actors to find the ideal building formula for the performance, including Ștefan Iordache, Gheorghe Dinică and Coca Bloss. The resulting cast was made up of Gheorghe (Faust) and Ofelia Popii (Mephisto).

“As the actor Ilie Gheorghe is facing some health issues and due to the fact that we have had many requests from both Romania and abroad, as well as from the audience and cultural programmers, big event organizers in Hungary, France, Germany, China, Japan and the United States of America, we have decided to perform with Miklós Bács, who has played in countless shows directed by Silviu Purcărete, at the Hungarian State Theatre of Cluj, but also in the international coproduction of the Radu Stanca National Theatre, Pantagruel’s Sister in Law”, Constantin Chiriac stated. Two premiere representations with this cast will take place at Fabrica de cultură on 8 and 9 April 2017, at 19:00. The show will later be performed in Budapest on 27 and 28 April, at the Madách International Theatre Meeting (MITEM). The two sold out performances in Budapest will start at 19:00, at Eiffel Műhelyház (Eiffer Workshop House), a venue especially arranged for the production of the Sibiu National Theatre. As part of the tour, the performance on 27 April will be followed by a discussion with the audience, while, on 28 April, at 15:00, the Budapest National Theatre will host a special conference, moderated by George Banu, and themed “Faust as Silviu Purcărete’s theatrical poetry”; guests of the conference include the director, the stage designer, Helmut Stürmer, the composer, Vasile Șirli and the general manager of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu, Constantin Chiriac. The tour is supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Tickets for the Sibiu representations are up for sale and can be purchased at the Theatre Agency on 17 Nicolae Bălcescu St., and online, through eventim.ro.
