“Electra”, a performance beyond words

03-Nov-2017

Located in the Jiangxi Province of China, the city of Fuzhou was host to the first edition of the Tang Xianzu International Theatre Festival, at which the “Radu Stanca” National theatre of Sibiu was an honorary guest, with the performance “Electra”, directed by Mihai Măniuțiu, the only Romanian presence at the event. The performance took place on the 26th of October and was the closing event of the debut edition. Following the audiences’ reaction, the organizers expressed their intention to invite the national theatre of Sibiu with another performance at the next edition.

Born from the authorities’ wish to develop the community through culture, the event took place between the 24th of September and the 26th of October 2017 and presented performances from countries like Japan, Russia, Spain, Albania and Romania. The tour, organized in a province of China that specifically requested this performance for which great artistic, logistical and financial efforts were made, was an important and strategic one for the national theatre of Sibiu and the structures it developed.

The performance “Electra” has been touring internationally for 12 years, but this was its first time in China. The experience was even more interesting as most spectators, with a very different culture from the performing arts universe, were not used to performance halls and participation in cultural events. Actors from the cast are Mariana Mihu, Ioana Crăciunescu, Marian Râlea, Pali Vecsei, Dan Glasu, Ofelia Popii, Florin Coşuleţ, Adrian Matioc. The chorus consists of actors Diana Fufezan, Cristina Stoleriu, Dana Taloş, Codruţa Vasiu, Mihai Coman, Adrian Neacşu, Cătălin Neghină, Eduard Pătraşcu, Cătălin Pătru, Viorel Raţă și Bogdan Sărătean, and the performance is presented with the extraordinary participation of the Iza Group.

Several of the actors shared how they felt the experience at the Fuzhou festival.
Marian Râlea, who plays the part of Orestes, declared after the performance: “The city hall here wished with all its heart that we should be present, to close the festival of Fuzhou, which is at its first edition – which I believe is a great success. Here I am, exiled in a country that we perceive as abrupt and in which it is quite difficult to get into peoples’ hearts. But Orestes was welcomed with applause, with smiles; wherever we went, people wanted to take pictures of us and on the street, they always smiled, so this world is open, maybe because of Orestes, or better said, because of theatre. Of course, we are talking about Electra, a timeless performance, that was played on all continents, a play in which I believed, together with an exceptional team of TNRS.”
“For me, this performance is an endless experience, which took me all over the world. It’s exciting. The most exciting are the people, that look at what we do, and at us, as physical people, with wonder and childish joy”, declared Ioana Crăciunescu, the actress that plays the role of Clytemnestra. Electra, Mariana Mihu, spoke about the closeness between the European and Asian cultures: “It felt like a grand adventure to be in China. I have been to many festivals, on several continents, with this performance, but it is the first time I’ve participated at a theatre festivals’ first edition. I am very happy to be here and to have brought on Asian land a part of what European civilization means. I hope that that public realized that what apparently separates us, because we are different, in fact, unites us.”

The cultural project between Romania and China continue in the next years

Through a letter addressed to the festivals’ management team, the general manager of TNRS, Constantin Chiriac, expressed his openness to collaborate with the Chinese partners in future projects that can involve both TNRS, FITS, the Performing Arts Market and the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu. He declared after the performance from Fuzhou that “we have a privileged relationship with the People’s Republic of China. The tour we had in China, in this wonderful autumn, proved our very special friendship that animates the relationship between the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, TNRS and China. After the triumph we had last year at the People’s Art Theatre, Beijing, after the relationships we have established with the Shanghai festival for the next three years, we also have the joy of gaining an absolutely extraordinary victory, a meeting of souls in this wonderful city, with a fantastic audience and, at the same time, with a very special theatre, with warmth, and technical conditions. We have a soul connection and a strategic connection that we will develop in the years to come in a way that, when we set upon this adventure, we couldn’t even imagine.”
